Dermal fillers are soft tissue fillers that are injected into the skin. They are gel like textured and the most commonly used fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA).
As we age, our skin loses its collagen and hyaluronic acid, leading to a loss of skin firmness, elasticity and volume of the face. This results in sagging skin, formation of wrinkles and deep skin folds.
Dermal fillers can be classified into two groups depending on their comprising components such as hyaluronic acid or collagen stimulators
HA fillers – Typically used to sculpt the face, erase the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and to increase the hydration level in the skin. These are the most commonly used dermal fillers in Singapore, and examples of known brands include Restylane and Juvederm.
Collagen Stimulating Fillers – Containing Calcium Hydroxyapatite (Radiesse) or poly L-lactic acid (Sculptra) induce collagen formation in the skin and enhances the formation of the scaffold that supports the structure of the face and replaces volume loss.
Dermal fillers are used to add volume and definition to the face and fill in folds in the skin such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
BOTOX is used to relax the facial muscles of expression and smoothen out wrinkles.
Though they have different properties, both dermal fillers and BOTOX can be combined in the treatments to give the patient their desired result.
